The Athletic Trainer’s Roadmap to DEXA Certification: Credits, Compliance, and Career Growth

In our November 2025 blog, From the Sidelines to the Scan Room, we discussed how Bone Densitometry (DEXA) has moved from the hospital to the sidelines. From managing RED-S to monitoring return-to-play structural integrity, the “Gold Standard” of body composition is now a staple in modern sports science.

But for the practicing Athletic Trainer, the question usually isn’t why you should use it—it’s how do you obtain the education and make sure it’s approved CE for your certification?

With our new status as a BOC Approved Provider, AHEC has built a streamlined “Roadmap to DEXA” specifically designed for the busy AT.

Step 1: Understand Your Credits (The BOC Category A)

As of 2026, Advanced Health Education Center is officially approved by the Board of Certification to provide Category A CEUs.

While Radiologic Technologists use a different “Category A” system, for ATs, our courses now count toward your core 50-unit biennial requirement (of which at least 10 must be Category A).

Step 2: Clear the “Radiation Safety” Hurdle

If you are not a licensed Radiologic Technologist, most state regulations require you to complete a foundational course in radiation safety before you can legally operate a DEXA unit.

To make this easy, we offer a specialized course: Practical Radiation Safety for DEXA Operators.

  • The Strategy: We schedule this 4-hour course the day before our initial training. This ensures you are legally compliant before you ever touch the equipment.

Step 3: The 16-Hour Clinical Deep Dive

Once the safety foundation is laid, you move into the Bone Densitometry Initial Training. This 16-hour intensive covers:

  • Precise Body Composition (Fat vs. Lean Mass)
  • Identifying Asymmetry in Athletes
  • Anatomy and Positioning
  • Quality Control and Equipment Maintenance

Watch: To see what the clinical application looks like in real-time, check out this overview of How to Perform a DXA Scan.

Step 4: Mark Your Calendar (June 11-13, 2026)

The most efficient way to complete this roadmap is to do it all in one weekend.

  • Thursday, June 11: Practical Radiation Safety (4 Hours)
  • Friday & Saturday, June 12-13: Bone Densitometry Initial Training (16 Hours)

What Your Peers Say About the Roadmap

We’ve been perfecting this curriculum for over 20 years. Here is how your fellow healthcare professionals describe the experience:

  • “A very thorough course that left me feeling ready… Being able to complete the necessary hours over a weekend is so helpful.”
  • “Great speaker! He covered every equipment type and gave plenty of time for questions. Very informative and interactive.”
