What Qualities Make a Good Leader?

Leadership /ˈlēdərˌSHip/ (noun): the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Anyone can be assigned a leadership role, for example, a manager, supervisor, commander, etc. A leader doesn’t always come with a title, and a title doesn’t always make someone a good leader. A person with good leadership skills is able to create connections with their group members and build a solid foundation that improves the work environment. Leaders don’t focus only on the big picture; they also work on the layers and pieces that make it up. Here are a few qualities all good leaders should have:

1. Effective Communication

A leader knows how to actively listen to and speak with their employees. When multiple people are involved in a group, it is easy for information to get muddled. Being an effective communicator can make a work environment less stressful and will eliminate any confusion or misunderstandings.

2. Reciprocal Respect and Trust

Respect and trust are two qualities which are mutually earned between a leader and an employee. A leader treats others how they wish to be treated, which then boosts morale in the workplace. By opening and creating trust within the company, it is creating a stronger foundation for the business.

3. Innovation and Open-Mindedness

A good leader can complete creative and innovative tasks, problem solve, and are capable of developing ideas. However, a leader can’t manifest all of those things on their own and should be receptive to new ideas and avoid any resistance to change. A good leader will listen to employees and encourage them to get creative.

4. Likeability or popularity shouldn’t be a priority.

Giving constructive criticism, making difficult decisions to benefit the organization, and correcting any unethical behavior are some things that have to be done in order to be an efficient leader. It’s not always fun having to set an example, but it has to be done for the good of the company. If a person’s main concern is to be liked by everyone, then it derails any improvements.

5. Willingness to Learn.

A good leader should always be willing to learn. This can be from day-to-day experiences, events, or other people. Good leadership skills can also be achieved through formal education. Resources are always available on different platforms—whether that’s online, through reading books, or taking courses.

Become a Good Leader

Though there are many qualities a good leader should possess, it is important to remember they are all not required. A single person cannot attain so many qualities, but they can motivate others with different skillsets to provide what is lacking. Not all good leaders will be an Abraham Lincoln or a Catherine the Great, but they can still make an impact to any company or organization they are leading.
