Bettye Wilson, MA.Ed, RT(R)(CT), RDMS, FASRT, Elevated to ASRT Life Member

In recognition of her dedication and outstanding contributions to the field of radiologic sciences, Bettye Wilson, MA.Ed, RT(R) (CT), RDMS, FASRT, has been elevated to the esteemed status of Life Member by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT). This prestigious honor is evidence of Bettye’s remarkable career as a technologist, educator, and advocate for the radiologic sciences.

Exceptional Contributions

Bettye Wilson’s career as a technologist and educator has left a lasting mark on the radiology profession. A distinguished member of the ASRT curriculum revision group for the Computed Tomography Chapter, Bettye played a pivotal role in shaping educational standards in the rapidly evolving field of radiologic technology.

Marilyn Sackett, MEd. RT(R)(ARRT), FASRT, President and General Manager of the Advanced Health Education Center (AHEC), emphasized Bettye’s contributions in her letter of support: “It’s what you read between the lines of achievements that you know happened as she lived her professional life. It’s an incredible life achievement and I am glad I happened to be a very small part of it. Many patients have received better treatment and care from Bettye’s efforts to raise the level of skills, education, and professionalism from those healthcare professionals she had the opportunity to interact with… she deserves the recognition of her lifetime achievements from her professional organization. I stand in her shadow.”

Education and Mentoring

For over 20 years, Bettye has served as a faculty member for AHEC, influencing the lives of technologists by teaching the CT curriculum and offering guidance in registry review, updates, and more. Her expertise in this area has been instrumental in shaping the education and training of technologists nationwide. Bettye’s impact goes beyond the classroom as she has shared her insights on the role of radiation therapists and nuclear medicine technologists in CT at various national meetings. Bettye’s influence has been pivotal in guiding technologists along the way and helping them improve their careers through advanced level registries.

Bettye’s impact extends to literature, with many published articles and her textbook, “Ethics & Basic Law for Medical Imaging Professionals,” which has become popular in imaging sciences education. Even after her retirement as an Associate Professor of Radiologic Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Health-Related Professions, Bettye continues to share her talent and expertise by conducting seminars across the country.

ASRT Leadership and Advocacy

Bettye’s commitment extends beyond the classroom; she has served the radiologic science profession at the local, state, and national levels. Her tenure as President of the ARRT Board of Directors and Trustee until 2010 reflects her leadership on a grand scale. Additionally, Bettye’s advocacy for ASRT’s mission has been steadfast, demonstrated through her involvement in multiple committees and assignments that have pioneered positive changes benefiting the profession.

Recognition as an ASRT Life Member

The elevation of Bettye Wilson to the esteemed status of ASRT Life Member is a testament to her exceptional career and continuous dedication to the field. According to ASRT Bylaws, life members are individuals who have maintained active membership for a minimum of 30 continuous years, reflecting exceptional service and dedication to the ASRT and the radiologic science profession.

Bettye Wilson’s journey from technologist and educator to ASRT Life Member is a celebration of a remarkable career dedicated to the radiologic sciences. Her contributions, both in the classroom and through leadership roles, have left an impact on the profession. Bettye stands as an inspiration for future generations of radiologic technologists, embodying the values of professionalism, education, and advocacy that the ASRT holds dear.

Bettye will be receiving her life membership on June 28th, 2024 during the ASRT Annual Governance and House of Delegates meeting. In ASRT’s history, only 45 members have received this most prestigious honor.
